Binaural Beats – What Are They?

Posted In: Sound Therapy

To simply things, binaural beats are like exercises for the mind. It’s because they are known to help with memory, mood, cognition, thought, understanding, and even in the treatment of diseases connected to the brain, like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Binaural beats may even help with some conditions such as weight loss, insomnia, depression, anxiety, stress, bad habits, additions, self-discipline, self-confidence, and much, much more! When put like that, it almost sounds too good to be true, right?

Ok then, so why haven’t we heard about binaural beats before now? Well, it’s still considered one of the “fringe sciences” where there are an equal amount of skeptics and believers. Tons of users though can say though that… “It Works!” so all that is needed is more information out there. There are some people in the medical fields such as neurology who might know a bit about it when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease, that some neuro PT used to treat patients is based on binaural beats and brain entrainment. Sound therapy like binaural sounds, is a wonderful healing force that is used in so many cultures across the world. It works by “connecting” with each of your brain’s own hemispheres (binaural in fact refers to a different sound or frequency/wave in each ear), which our brains then mix together when processing them.

Many people believe in and swear by meditation and mindfulness and using binaural beats or brainwaves enhances this process. Meditation has been shown to reduce high beta levels in the brain, to allow it to function at a more relaxed pace. You can teach your brain to be more relaxed via entrainment and binaural beats seem to speed up and/or enhance this learning process. When people are in more relaxed and meditative states, improved mood, memory, brain function, body awareness, and cognition follow.
